Durga Puja is the greatest religious festival of the Bengali Hindus and one of the national festivals of India. Bengalis celebrate Durga Puja for five days in the autumn every year with great enthusiasm and fanfare..
The actual time and dates of the Puja are fixed by a Bengali ‘Panjika’ or calendar. The time and dates vary from year to year according to the phases of the moon. We, the members of Wimbledon Cultural Association, started Durga Puja as well as Kali Puja in South London for the first time in 2007. Since then we have been celebrating the Puja every year with great success. A very large number of people from all over London and outside come and join us in this joyous occasion.
Goddess Durga is the consort of Lord Shiva. She is a benign goddess who protects all those who seek her blessings. She has been worshiped since the Vedic times. She descends from mount Kailas every year in the autumn when we worship her. Goddess Durga is also a killer of the demons. When mighty buffalo demon Mahishasur tormented the gods and the earth she killed him in a fierce battle.
The naked fearsome black goddess Kali is another form of goddess Durga and is also killer of the demons. She is beautiful and benign. Worshiping her would avert all disaster and bring peace to the earth.
